► Printmaker Tapani Mikkonen (1952–2014) became known as a pioneer of painterly graphics in colour and monumental graphic art in Finland. His work was informed by the visual cultures of Japan, Spain and West Africa, among other sources. Mikkonen received the Finnish State Prize for Visual Arts in 2003 and he also pursued an internatio­nal career in art.
