Sometimes an artwork can affect us so powerfully that it leaves an indelible mark. An artwork can change our whole way of thinking, seeing and structuring the world. It can set in motion a process that stays alive within us. Kiitoskirjeitä (Thank-you Letters) is a catalogue accompanying the Serlachius’ eponymous exhibition in which a group of contemporary artists were invited to each choose an artwork that has affected them deeply and to express words of thanks to its creator. The chosen artworks and thank-you messages together form a meandering chain that passes from one artist to another, revealing surprising associations and connections between the artworks and their makers. The reader is invited to join the artists’ dialogue, which offers a glimpse into the anatomy of artistic inspiration at its most naked.
