► Hanna Heinilä was a self-taught, amateur photographer who documented the landscapes and people of Luvia over a century ago in a style that is captivating and artistically distinctive. Discovered by chance and spared from the landfill at the last minute, her remarkable photographs cover life’s entire spectrum from birth to death, from the first village tractor to seascapes dotted with old schooners. Capturing lost fragments of Finnish heritage, Heinilä’s images speak of the importance of family ties and preserve a warm document of special village occasions, women at work, farm chores, and other details of everyday life. Her finest images possess a special warmth that was uncharacteristic of photography in her day, and many of her breathtaking, inventive compositions are infused with playfulness and humour.
