Maaretta Jaukkuri became one of Finland’s first exhibition curators when the practice of curating first arrived in Finland, mainly from the United States and continental Europe in the 1980s. During her long and distinguished career, she has curated for many institutions in Finland and Norway, and she has also made her mark as a freelance curator in other parts of the world. A former professor at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art and the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, her educational work has focused especially on art in public space and practices of presenting art.
This anthology of Jaukkuri’s writings from the 1980s to the present day comprises both general essays introducing the themes of exhibitions and discussions of individual artists. Among the exhibitions covered in the essays are ARS 01, Lofoten International Art Festival LIAF 2006, Kiasma’s 10th anniversary exhibition Fluid Street in 2008, and Helsinki Festival’s Here Out There from 2015. The discussed artists include Cildo Meireles, Kari Cavén, Antony Gormley, Esko Männikkö, Anne-Karin Furunes and Randi Nygård.
