Contemporary Art Looks Back provides a glimpse into contemporary art research in Finland. Presenting a diverse array of academic perspectives, the articles in this anthology explore the many ways in which contemporary artists and artworks are connected to history. Contemporary art, like all art, draws on the long legacy of art history, and many artists deal with history in their work, either by focusing on specific events or looking back at the past from a broader perspective.
The volume marks the continuation of the Serlachius seminar publication series, the first part of which was Taidehistoria menee metsään! (Art History Goes Backwoods!). Bringing together experts from around Finland, the Serlachius Seminar in Mänttä advances current Finnish art history research and provides a forum for sharing knowledge outside university towns.
The anthology was produced in cooperation with the Society for Art History in Finland, and it is published in the peer-reviewed Studies in Art History publication series.
