Medieval objects, works of art, and buildings – both sacred and secular – have endured centuries of wear and transformation. Some have been lost, others preserved, yet all bear the imprint of human contact. Every scratch, dent, and repair tells a story, reflecting the shifting values and historical circumstances that have shaped their existence.
In this volume, art historians and archaeologists present new perspectives on the material cultural heritage of the Middle Ages. Through essays by Finnish and Swedish experts, the book examines artworks, architectural spaces, and objects, tracing their histories of use, fragmentation, museumisation and conservation. Kuvakalsketta keskiajalta is published in honour of Elina Räsänen, university lecturer and docent in art history, and it is published in the peer-reviewed Studies in Art History publication series.
