Critic, gallery owner, and Nordic pioneer of conceptual art, Jan Olof Mallander (born 1944) paved the way for the emergence of new artistic trends in Finland and Sweden through his writings and pioneering presence on the Nordic art scene from the late 1960s onwards. Through publications such as Hufvudstadsbladet and Taide magazine, he introduced the latest developments in international contemporary art to Nordic audiences. Mallander also served as an art critic for the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter and wrote for numerous Swedish art journals. He led both the Elonkorjaajat (Harvesters) artist collective, founded in the early 1970s, and the Cheap Thrills Gallery active during that decade. At a time when social realism dominated the Finnish art scene, the Cheap Thrills Gallery showcased new movements such as conceptual art, minimalism, video art, photographic art, installations, mail art, and comic art.
The author, Marko Home (1963–2025), held a PhD in art history and specialised in both international and Finnish avant-garde movements. Published posthumously, this volume is the first comprehensive study devoted to J. O. Mallander’s contribution to the art field.
