► Birger Carlstedt (1907–1975) was a prominent Finnish modernist and pioneer of abstract art. He kept up with current art discourse, dared to make experiments that diverged from the mainstream, and got to know the various art movements on his numerous trips abroad. His art contains echoes of trends within modernism – the expressive and the surrealist, as well as the cubist and the concrete. He also designed textiles and furniture, as well as, for instance, the ultramodern interior of the Le Chat Doré café in Helsinki. This is the first wide-ranging, comprehensive book about Carlstedt’s uncompromising, multifaceted art and unique persona.
