Stefan Bremer (b. 1953) is a leading name in Finnish photographic art. He began his career photographing punks, Teddy Boys and black-lipped goths in Helsinki’s nightlife. As the city began opening up to new influences during the frenetic late 1970s and early 1980s, Bremer and his camera never missed a beat: wherever new subcultures were emerging, he was there, with his finger on the pulse of the times. In the early 1980s, he achieved renown as a photographer of alternative youth subcultures and the rock ‘n’ roll scene, boldly establishing intimacy with his subjects in concert crowds. His nocturnal wanderings resulted in the legendary Fellini-esque cavalcade of images known as the Helsinki by Night series, which ranks among the most celebrated achievements of Bremer’s career.
