► Marjatta Hanhijoki (b. 1948) is a Finnish artist known for her watercolour paintings celebrating the beauty of the ordinary. She is also acclaimed for her graphic works portraying her friends and colleagues. These delicate, intimate portrayals of female companionship make for a highly nuanced study of womanhood. Hanhijoki is unrivalled in her exquisite command of the watercolour technique and in her extraordinary ability to imbue commonplace scenes – such as the wall of a studio or a collection of objects on a windowsill – with a sense of poetry and pent-up emotion. This book will be published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name opening at Kunsthalle Helsinki in November 2021 and the Oulu Museum of Art in 2023.
