Leading Finnish art critic Timo Valjakka has been writing about art since the 1980s. This book is an anthology of his writings dating from between 1990 and 2023, in which he reflects on his encounters with artists and the way they think and work. Valjakka’s in-studio conversations paint an intimate portrait of distinguished artists such as Paul Osipow, Tor Arne, Elina Brotherus, Sarah Morris, Richard Deacon and A.K. Dolven. The texts also trace the long arc of Valjakka’s notable career as an expert observer, interpreter and reviewer of modern and contemporary art. The chronologically presented writings were originally published in exhibition catalogues and art books, some of which now appear for the first time in Finnish.
